About This Resource

This website is an independent educational resource about Hòa Hảo Buddhism. Its purpose is to offer a clear, accurate, and respectful overview of the tradition's history, teachings, and practices for anyone who wants to understand it better.

Our approach

The pages here are written as neutral reference material, in the spirit of an encyclopaedia entry rather than a devotional text or a work of advocacy. We aim to describe what Hòa Hảo Buddhism is, where it came from, and what its adherents believe and do — without promoting it, criticising it, or presuming to speak for it. Where the historical record is contested or uncertain, we try to say so plainly.

Independence

This is an independent site. It is not affiliated with, authorised by, or endorsed by any Hòa Hảo Buddhist organisation, temple, administrative council, governing body, or the Vietnamese state, and it does not represent or speak for the tradition's adherents. Nothing here should be read as an official statement of the faith. For authoritative doctrinal or ceremonial guidance, readers should consult the tradition's own community institutions and sources.

Respect for a living tradition

Hòa Hảo Buddhism is a living faith practised by millions of people. We treat it as such: as public-record religious history to be described carefully and courteously. We have deliberately avoided reproducing sacred emblems as though speaking on the community's behalf, and we do not present devotional material as if from an official source. Our goal is understanding, offered with respect.

Sources

The information on this site is drawn from published, reputable sources, including encyclopaedic references such as Encyclopaedia Britannica, academic scholarship on Vietnamese religion and the Mekong Delta, and government and human-rights reporting such as the United Kingdom's country policy note on Hòa Hảo Buddhism. Vietnamese terms and diacritics are given as accurately as we can render them.

Why an independent resource

Clear, neutral, English-language information about Hòa Hảo Buddhism is not always easy to find. Much of what exists online is either devotional material written for adherents, or brief encyclopaedia entries that leave many questions unanswered. This site tries to fill the gap in between: a fuller account than a short reference article, but written from the outside, for a general reader, without the assumptions of an insider. We hope it is useful to students, to travellers curious about the religions of the Mekong Delta, to people of other faiths seeking to understand a neighbour, and to members of the tradition's own diaspora looking for material to share in English.

Corrections

We welcome corrections and constructive feedback. If you notice a factual error or an infelicity in how something is described, please get in touch via the contact page so that we can review and improve the material. Accuracy and respect are the two standards we hold ourselves to.
